Der Hintergrund: im Sommer 2007 wurde im brasilianischen Amazonas-Gebiet ein trauriger Rekord aufgestellt: im Vergleich zum Vorjahr verdoppelte sich die Zahl der Waldbrände. Der Amazonas sagt Ihnen gar nichts?

Mit einem Fünftel des gesamten Süßwassers unserer Erde ist der Amazonas der wasserreichste Fluss der Welt. Der Amazonas-Regenwald ist mit einer Fläche so groß wie Westeuropa der größte Wald unseres Planeten. Ein Viertel aller lebenden Pflanzen und Tiere sind dort beheimatet. Kurz: der Amazonas ist ein einzigartiges Ökosystem mit atemberaubenden Dimensionen. Diese Aufzählung soll eins deutlich machen: zu denken, der Amazonas ist weit weg und für uns hier in Europa nicht wichtig, ist ein Riesenfehler. The Amazon Rainforest

Home to the richest environmental biodiversity on the planet, the magnificent Amazon rainforest is famous in nearly every corner of the world for its stunning beauty. In recent years, the forest was even short listed to be counted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The Amazon rainforest stretches across nine South American nations and encompasses 1.7 billion acres of pristine wet broadleaf forest. Sadly, advances in human development and global climate change are threatening this precious land, and it is up to a new generation of environmentalist to save the Amazon rainforest before it is too late.

While most people are aware of the famous Piranhas and brilliantly colored birds of this zone, few realize just how biodiverse the Amazon rainforest really is. Nearly one in ten of all of the living species of plants and animals are home to Amazon rainforest, making this region the richest example of biodiversity on the surface of the early. In a single square kilometer of the Amazon rainforest, botanists speculate that a scientist could find as many as 75,000 species of trees, as well as countless other forms of plant life. The Amazon rainforest is home to an astounding 2.5 million separate species of insects and approximately 2,000 different types of birds and mammals.

However, just as we are learning how precious this zone might be to the social and economic future of humanity, it is increasingly clear that we are loosing this precious commodity at an alarming rate. It was not until the late 1960's that modern human development truly got underway in the Amazon rainforest, but it only took four short decades for unregulated farmers to wreak havoc upon the Amazon rainforest. Today, the majority of the deforestation occurring in the Amazon rainforest is simply in order to create grazing land for cattle.

Thankfully, there is still hope for a bright future in the Amazon rainforest. As more and more people become aware of the impact that our activities are having on the planet, it is finally appearing likely that individuals will realize that they can make a difference in time. South American nations and non-governmental agencies alike are rushing to pass new policies that severely restrict the ability of unscrupulous developers to destroy the Amazon rainforest in the pursuit of easy money. Although the future is far from certain, it is growing clear that we have the will and the ability to save the Amazon rainforest.
